infrared survey
bardid-e forusorx

Fr.: relevé infrarouge

Observing a large area of sky (or the whole sky) in infrared wavelengths.

infrared; → survey.

infrared telescope
durbin-e forusorx (#), teleskop-e ~ (#)

Fr.: télescope infrarouge

A telescope capable of observing → infrared radiation from astronomical objects.

infrared; → telescope.

infrared window
rowzane-ye forusorx (#)

Fr.: fenêtre infrarouge

A range of infrared wavelengths to which the Earth's atmosphere is relatively transparent, and at which observations can be made from the ground. Infrared windows are found near wavelengths of 1.25, 1.65, 2.2, 3.6, 5.0, 10, 20, and 30 microns, and beyond 300 microns.

infrared; → window.

intermediate infrared
forusorx-e miyâni (#)

Fr.: infrarouge moyen

The infrared radiation with wavelengths between about 1.5 and 20 microns. → near infrared; → far infrared.

intermediate; → infrared.

luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG)
kahkešân-e forusorx-e tâbân

Fr.: galaxie lumineuse en infrarouge

A galaxy that emits most of its energy in the infrared and whose infrared luminosity (in the 8-1000 µm range) is more than 1011 solar luminosities. → ultraluminous infrared galaxy.

luminous; → infrared; → galaxy.

mid-infrared
forusorx-e miyâni (#)

Fr.: infrarouge moyen

The portion of the → electromagnetic radiation lying between the → near-infrared and the → far-infrared. This covers the wavelength range approximately from 8 to 30 → microns. See also: → infrared radiation, → submillimeter radiation.

mid-; → infrared.

middle infrared
forusorx-e miyâni (#)

Fr.: infrarouge moyen

Same as → mid-infrared.

middle; → infrared.

near-infrared
forusorx-e nazdik (#)

Fr.: proche infrarouge

That region of the → electromagnetic spectrum covering shorter infrared wavelengths. It contains the → infrared windows between about 0.8 and 8 → microns, but the longer wavelength limit is not well defined. See also: → infrared radiation, → mid-infrared, → far-infrared, → submillimeter radiation.

near; → infrared.

Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)
Nepâhešgâh-e Cine-sepehri barây axtaršenâsi-ye forusorx

Fr.: Observatoire stratosphérique pour l'astronomie infrarouge

A partnership of NASA and the German Aerospace Center, consisting of an extensively modified Boeing 747SP aircraft carrying a reflecting telescope with an effective diameter of 2.5 m. NASA Ames Research Center manages SOFIA's science and mission operations in cooperation with the Universities Space Research Association and the German SOFIA Institute. SOFIA is the largest airborne observatory in the world, with a planned 20-year lifetime.

stratospheric; → observatory; → infrared; → astronomy.

ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG)
kahkešân-e forusorx-e ultar-tâbân

Fr.: galaxie ultralumineuse en infrarouge

A galaxy that emits more than 90% of its energy in the infrared (8-1000 µm) and whose infrared luminosity exceeds 1012 solar luminosities. → luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG). Quasars can also have such high or even higher bolometric luminosities. However LIRGs and ULIRGs emit the bulk of their energy in the infrared. Most of ULIRGs are found in merging and interacting galaxy systems. It is thought that their luminosity results from galactic collisions, which increase the rate of star formation.

ultraluminous; → infrared; → galaxy.

Unidentified Infrared Band (UIB)
bând-e forusorx-e nâ-idânidé

Fr.: bande infrarouge non identifiée

A no longer in general use name for → Aromatic Infrared Band.

unidentified; → infrared; → band.

Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)

A → NASA infrared astronomical → space telescope launched in December 2009 to carry out an → all-sky survey from 3 to 22 → microns. With its 40-cm → telescope telescope and → infrared cameras, WISE aimed at a wide variety of studies ranging from the evolution of → protoplanetary disks to the history of → star formation in normal galaxies. In early October 2010, after completing its prime science mission, the spacecraft ran out of → coolant that keeps its instrumentation cold. However, two of its four infrared cameras remained operational. Hence, NASA extended the NEOWISE portion of the WISE mission by four months, with the primary purpose of hunting for more → asteroids and → comets, and to finish one complete scan of the main → asteroid belt. In August 2013, the WISE telescope's mission was extended for more three years to search for asteroids that could collide with Earth.

wide field; → infrared; → survey; → explorer.
