Etymology (PE): Bâzi, from Mid.Pers. wâzig “game, play,” related to bâzidan “to play,” bâxtan/bâz- “to loose (in game);” Proto-Ir. *uāz- “to play, contend;” cf. Skt. vāja- “contest, war, gain, reward” (Cheung 2007).
